What does this measure?

The number of students who were suspended from school for at least one full day, expressed as a percentage of total enrollment.

Why is this important?

Significant school suspensions can have negative effects on learning outcomes, attendance, and future behavior.

How is Westchester County performing?

In 2020, 2%, or nearly 2,400 students in Westchester County, were suspended from school for at least one day. This is a 62% decrease in the number of suspensions from 2015. Westchester's suspension rate is on par with the statewide rate and slightly above the 1% rates in Nassau, Putnam and Rockland counties. Westchester's decrease was the highest among the counties and larger than the state's 42% decline.

School districts with high rates of suspensions in 2020 include Mount Pleasant-Cottage Union Free School District at 15%, and Greenburgh-Graham Union Free School District at 10%.
