Demographics

Demographics is the study of populations, and from a demographic perspective, Westchester County’s population is growing, aging and becoming more diverse – racially, ethnically and linguistically (languages spoken).

From 2010 to 2022, the total population of Westchester County increased 4.3%, with more than 990,000 residents calling the area home in 2022. This compares to growth of 1.5% in the state and 7.9% in the nation.

The largest locality in Westchester County is the City of Yonkers, with a population of approximately 208,000 in 2022. Other population centers include Mount Vernon (154,000), Greenburgh (93,100) and New Rochelle (82,300). The fastest growing places since 2010 were Ardsley (which grew 12.9%), Sleepy Hollow (11.4%) and Larchmont (10.7%).

Westchester County has grown more diverse since 2008-12. The Hispanic population grew fastest, increasing by 24% from 2008-12 to 2018-22, followed by the Asian population (20%) and the African American population (6%). The white population decreased by 11% during this same time period but still makes up a large majority, with over 571,000 residents.

Among age groups, the fastest growing between 2008-12 and 2018-22, was people aged 85 or older, which increased 21%, while the number of people between the ages of 60 and 84 increased 26%. By comparison, the population 20 to 39 grew by only 8%, and there were decreases of 3% and 4%, respectively, among people 40 to 59 and among those under 20.

Of those 65 and older in the county, 38% lived alone in 2016-20, 2 percentage points lower than in 2008-12. That’s over 47,800 people in Westchester County.

In 2018-22, 10% of the population in Westchester County, or about 100,100 people, had a disability, slightly lower than New York State (12%) and the U.S (13%).

More than a third of Westchester residents spoke a language other than English at home – 34% in 2018-22, up from 32% in 2008-12. This is higher than both the state rate (31%), which increased 1 point since 2008-12, and the national rate (22%), up 1 point.

In 2018-22, 26% of the Westchester County population were foreign-born, a one percentage point increase since 2008-12. This is just above the state rate of 23% and 12 points higher than the national rate of 14%. Additional detailed Census Bureau information on the demographics of Westchester's immigrant residents is available by following this link.
