What does this measure?

The net growth or decline in jobs by sector, shown as a percentage gain or loss from 2001 to 2020.

Why is this important?

Job growth by sector is a key indicator of economic vitality and reveals how the structure of industry and the composition of employment in the region are changing.

How is Westchester County performing?

Total jobs in Westchester County increased by 7% from 2001 to 2020, lower than the 11% increase for New York and the 15% increase for the United States. Westchester experienced the most job gains in Financial Activities (52%), Health Care (18%), and Educational Services (17%). Over the same period, Information and Manufacturing jobs in the region both fell by 48% and 45%, respectively.

Compared to similar counties, Westchester's total job growth lagged behind Rockland (19%), Putnam (15%) and Nassau (9%). Westchester County's sector trends were very similar to trends in the comparison counties. All the counties, for example, had losses in Information Services - jobs fell 49% in Rockland County, 47% in Nassau and 35% in Putnam - and gains in Financial Activities - up 77% in Rockland, 47% in Nassau, and 42% in Putnam.
