What does this measure?

The growth or decline in total jobs, shown as a percentage gain or loss from the previous year.

Why is this important?

Job growth is a key indicator of economic health and vitality and reveals whether and by how much an economy is expanding. In addition to the number of jobs, the quality of jobs should be considered - this is reflected in measures of average salary.

How is Westchester County performing?

Total jobs increased by 5.3% in Westchester County from 2021 to 2022, as the economy continued rebounding from the COVID-19 pandemic and ensuing shutdowns. This was similar to the state increase of 5.4%, and slightly more than the national increase of 4.8%. The number of jobs increased in all comparison counties between 2021 and 2022, also due to the economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic. Westchester had the second-largest increase in jobs, behind Nassau with a 5.8% increase. Both Rockland and Putnam counties had similar increases, at 4.2% and 5.2%, respectively.

Prior to the pandemic, Westchester's annual increase in total jobs had lagged the state and the nation since 2012.

Notes about the data

County employment is reported by place of work, not place of residence.
